For five years, Walke Communications handled the day-to-day public relations activities for the City of Solana Beach in addition to managing crisis communications for the Cedros Crossing Development, a deadly shark attack, and the potential sale of the Del Mar Fair Grounds. The most prominent crisis issue was handling the communications for the 2010 fatal shark attack. Along with Steve Didier from the City of Solana Beach, Walke managed a swift and skillful media strategy to face the growing international and national media attention rapidly converging onto Fletcher Cover Park and Solana Beach, a town of 13,000. An ethical and honest approach to balancing the public’s right to know and the family’s right to privacy helped to retain the City’s good reputation. By successfully managing the message, we mitigated public panic and rumor.
